Before we dive into some promposal ideas, here are three indispensable tips to consider before we begin:

Make it personal.

If you’re lost on a theme, tailor the promposal to their interests! Do they play any sports? What are their favorite bands or movies? Do you have any shared hobbies or passions? Make a list of some of their personal favorites, and the promposal might just plan itself!

Make it lighthearted.

No matter what happens, at the end of the day, this event is meant to be fun. Don’t make the moment awkward by treating it like a serious, life-or-death situation. It’s never that deep. Remember to let loose and have fun!

Make it meaningful.

This goes without saying: don’t commission your date’s friends to plan the promposal out for you. Show that you care by spearheading the process. Your prom date will appreciate your proposal even more if they know the time and effort you gave to make their experience unforgettable.

25 Promposal Ideas

• The Classic Poster Proposal

– There’s a reason this one is a long-time favorite. It’s not too over-the-top, plus you have endless creative license. You can make a clever pun, add fun photos, and show off your artistic skills using markers, glitter, paint, or anything your heart desires!

Bonus points if you pair the poster with a goody bag of her favorite snacks and/or a bouquet of flowers. I remember so many of my friends meeting together to craft their promposals for their dates, swapping ideas and sharing advice.

• Food-Themed Proposal

– Nothing bonds people like some good food! Whether it’s a box of cupcakes, a box of pizza, or some donuts, you can customize your date’s favorite food item with the question “Will you go with me to prom?” written on the inside.

Or if she’s a fan of candy, you can stick a little note for them inside a candy bag and present it to them.

• Incorporate Their Favorite Movie or Show

– Is your date a fan of Disney movies? Marvel? Does she watch Pride and Prejudice (2005) to take the edge off after every exam? Use movie quotes, themed costumes and/or props related to her favorite movies or shows for the perfect promposal!

• The Car Decor Surprise

– If you’re the type who likes to go big or go home, you can’t go bigger than using your car as the main prop for your promposal!

Decorate your car with window markers, balloons, and streamers for a promposal your date won’t be able to miss! Bonus points if you make your grand entrance by stepping dramatically out of the trunk.

I remember one prom date surprising me in the parking lot with a handmade poster while my friends recorded. That was definitely a memorable moment!

• Flash Mob Proposal

– Channel your inner Troy Bolton and plan a quick dance routine with some friends to pop the question!

This is a great way to involve your friends in an entertaining promposal, and it will certainly be a fun memory for the future. All you need is some music and plenty of space for the dance floor!

• Sports-Themed Proposal

– We all know sports are very near and dear to an athlete’s heart. If your date is one of them, show your appreciation by writing “Prom?” on a piece of athletic equipment and presenting it to them at the perfect time.

• The Flower Bouquet Proposal

– Something sweet, classy, and tastefully old-fashioned, you can never go wrong with an elegant bouquet of flowers.

Wrap a bouquet of your date’s favorites and add a heartfelt, handwritten note inside for them to find. I remember one prom date presenting me with flowers in my favorite color and a handmade poster.

It’s always fun to take a bouquet home and arrange it in a cute vase!

• Fortune Cookie Surprise

– This is a cute and simple food-related promposal, especially if your date is a fan of Chinese cuisine. All you have to do is customize a fortune cookie — either homemade or ordered from a bakery — with a slip of paper inside asking your date to prom.

Then just wait for them to break it open!

• The Bookworm Proposal

– Does your date routinely quote Shakespeare or Jane Austen? Is she perpetually buried in a book?

Chances are, nothing is more important than her current read, so the best way to get her attention is to slip your promposal into the pages of her favorite book.

Or, better yet, buy her the next novel on her TBR list with a promposal written just below the book’s dedication. Personally, if someone did this for me, I wouldn’t hesitate to say ‘yes!’

• Prom Proposal in a Balloon Pop

– Here’s a great way to start prom season with a bang! Inflate a balloon with confetti and a written promposal inside and present it to your date with a pin. Have her pop the balloon to reveal the surprise within!

• Chalk It Up Proposal

– Are you ready to explore your artistic side? Embrace your child-like love of sidewalk chalk by designing a promposal where your date can’t miss it! All you need is a box of chalk and a sunny forecast!

• Puzzle Piece Proposal

– Is your date a fan of brain teasers and riddles? Print out a custom-made promposal and cut it into puzzle pieces for her to solve.

All you need are some basic Canva skills, paper, and/or cardstock. If you’re unsure as to how you should cut the puzzle up, use a puzzle you already own as a reference!

• Cupcake or Cake Topper Proposal

– This is similar to the food-related promposal, but instead of writing the question inside the box, use cake toppers or frosting to write out “Prom?” on some sweet treats.

• The Gamer’s Proposal

– If your date is an avid gaming enthusiast, incorporate her favorite video game in the promposal. You can even design a custom message on a gaming controller using paint markers.

• Beach or Park Picnic Proposal

– If you know some scenic areas near your hometown, set up a cozy picnic to surprise your date with a promposal message.

All you need is a picnic basket, blanket, and a handmade prom poster! Just make sure you keep an eye on the weather and keep the poster hidden until the perfect moment!

• Prom Proposal via Scavenger Hunt

– If your date loves deductive thinking games, set up a scavenger hunt with clues leading to a final “Prom?” reveal.

This hunt might be limited to just a house or a school building, or if she’s the spontaneous, adventurous type, you might leave clues for her all over town. All you need are clues she’s sure to pick up on and the surprise at the end of the hunt!

• Glow in the Dark Room Surprise

– If you like the idea of a magical, intimate promposal, decorate a room with some glow sticks or fairy lights that spell out “Prom?” Make sure the room is dark in order to yield the full effect.

• Gift Box Reveal

– Everyone loves receiving presents, and this is certainly not limited to just birthdays or Christmas. Find a cute box and pair it with a small gift, such as a piece of jewelry, a charm, or a miniature stuffed animal.

Then add a note saying, “Will you go to prom with me?” Such a simple yet heartfelt promposal will warm anyone’s heart.

• Drive-In Movie Proposal

• Here’s another thoughtful and classically old-fashioned promposal. Take your date to a drive-in movie, bring some cozy blankets, and pop the question with a handmade poster. The relaxed, comfortable environment will make for the sweetest promposal in the books.

• Coding Proposal

– Computer science nerds sometimes get a bad rep, but if you’re one of them, you should know that you have some transferable skills when it comes to adorable promposals.

Use your talents to code or animate a simple promposal to send to your date. Bonus points if she can interact with it by clicking a “yes” or “no” button with the “yes” button leading to digital confetti.

• String Lights Message

– For a romantic, Rapunzel-esque promposal, surprise your date by spelling out “Prom?” with some string lights or fake candles in a field or backyard. The warm glow of the string lights will enhance the magic of the occasion and serve as a precursor to the prom night to come!

• Musical Performance Proposal

– Are you musically inclined? Prone to breaking into song at the slightest provocation? Use your talent to serenade your date and ask her to prom at the end of your stunning performance. Props may include a musical instrument or a microphone.

• The “Balloons Everywhere” Proposal

– If Up is your date’s favorite Pixar movie, this promposal idea is for you. All you need is a helium pump, string, and a whole bunch of balloons to fill your date’s locker, car, or bedroom.

You can write a promposal sign to tape to the wall or hide in one of the balloons for her to find. No doubt it will be one of the most memorable promposals she will ever receive.

• Board Game Proposal

– If your date is a fan of board games, integrate your promposal into her favorite game by writing the question on a game piece, like a chess piece, checker, Jenga block, or Scrabble tile.

Not only is this a cute way to pop the question, but it will give her a small memento for her to remember the moment. Who knows? It might just end up in her special box of keepsakes.

• Pet Proposal

– To be honest, there’s always a chance your promposal might be rejected, no matter how flawlessly executed. But do you know what can never be rejected?

A pet’s promposal. Use a pet-friendly tag or sign to get yours or your date’s pet to “ask” your date to promposal for you. Surely no one will be able to resist such an adorable request.

Timing.

Listen. I know it can be stressful to plan a promposal, but at the end of the day, it’s all about being considerate and thoughtful. Timing is a huge part of that.

Here’s a hint: if she’s been sick with a 103-degree fever for the past week, maybe give her a couple of days to recover before asking her to prom in front of all of her friends. (This totally did not happen to me.)

Make sure she’s not rushing to cram for a test next period or is too busy to fully enjoy the moment. Read the room, and you should be totally fine.

Involve friends.

Don’t forget to share this sweet moment with your friends! Depending on your date’s personality, she may or may not be a fan of crowds, so gauge her comfort level beforehand.

However, inviting a few special people in her life will make the moment all the more memorable. Involve them in the planning process too! Maybe they have some great ideas for you to incorporate into your promposal.

Capture the moment.

The best promposals always have a designated cameraman to take a video of the moment, just to make sure there’s something tangible to look back on with a smile.

Videos and photos have a way of keeping memories fresh and alive for many years to come. Once you have all these elements planned out, you should be all set to give the perfect promposal!

If you prefer to shop online and aren’t in much of a rush, there are plenty of arts and crafts options available on sites like Amazon.

You can also find posters, stationery, snacks, and flowers at stores like Target, Walmart, and Michaels. Find your nearest craft store, grab your friends, and make a day of it!
