Learning how to be an adult post-graduation can be difficult. I recommend spending time with your friends as a way of helping you settle into your new life.

My friends and I go out for dinner every weekend, and this has helped us get acquainted with our new lifestyle.

We try to go to as many different restaurants as we can because we want to explore the area more.

Graduation caps fall, Instagram feeds explode—and suddenly you’re on the other side of college, wondering, ‘Now what?’

Many people look forward to their college graduation, but many people don’t realize how stressful it can be.

Being done with college can be a great feeling until you know the struggles that lie on the other side.

Graduation is exciting, and finishing college is a big relief, but what comes next is stressful. There is a lot of anxiety, confusion, and pressure surrounding your next moves after college.

This article will explore what no one tells you about life after graduation. It also goes beyond job boards and LinkedIn updates.

The Post-Grad Reality Check

Common Struggles Graduates Don’t Talk About Enough

How to Navigate Adulting Without Losing Your Mind

Finding Your Next Chapter — Career, Purpose & Growth

Mental Health, Self-Worth, and Redefining Success

The Post-Grad Reality Check

• Adulting Isn’t Instant

You won’t magically know how to budget, cook, or file taxes. It’s okay to still Google questions such as “how to set up health insurance?” Settling into your post-college life takes time.

Don’t be afraid to take your time finding out how to do the essentials. Give yourself the time to adjust to your new lifestyle before you decide to change it.

• Your Dream Job Might Take Time

It’s common not to land your ideal job immediately. Take small steps to get to your dream job. Holding an entry-level position isn’t failure; it’s experience. Take any experience you can get. That’s what will help you get your dream job.

It can be difficult to find a job straight out of college. Looking at job boards such as Indeed and Handshake can be helpful. Setting up and maintaining a LinkedIn profile can also help you land a job that will help you get your dream job.

• Your Routine Will Shift (and That’s Weird at First)

Graduating from college means your schedule will change. While not having classes can be appealing, you also lose spring vacation and summer break.

Your schedule will change after you graduate. Working a 9-to-5 job is a common lifestyle, and you will get used to it. This new routine will feel weird at first, but after some adjustments, it won’t feel weird anymore.

Keeping a weekly schedule has helped me keep track of everything I’m doing. Juggling work, hobbies, and friends is difficult without an organized calendar.

Whenever I’m given a new opportunity, I always look at my calendar to make sure I have the time for it.

• Comparison Culture Hits Hard

At some point, you will find yourself comparing your peer’s success to your success. Everyone has a different timeline, and that’s okay. Your rate of success is completely independent of anyone else’s success.

• Post-Grad Loneliness Is Real

Moving away from college friends while also starting over in a new place can be difficult and lonely. Finding a new support system takes time.

Trying new things and taking on some hobbies will help you meet new people. Connecting with college friends to see if they know anyone in the area that you could meet is also a great way to meet new people.

Loneliness after graduation is a real feeling, and it takes time to overcome, but it will happen. I started taking on a few hobbies as a way of meeting new people, and it has helped me make new friends.

• Decision Fatigue

There is a lot of uncertainty post-graduation, but you will find the pathway that is best for you. Just remember, give yourself some grace during this time.

One piece of advice that I have heard from multiple professors is that you should get experience in the real world after you graduate from college.

Most people don’t know what they want to do with their careers after they graduate. You should take your time trying to figure out what you want to do.

I have heard many professors tell me that I should wait as long as I can before going to grad school because having more experience before applying helps you get accepted, and you shouldn’t spend money on a grad school program until you know what you want to do.

When looking for my first job, I applied to many different places. I kept applying to different places until I was given the opportunity to accept my first job.

One thing I do to keep myself organized is by having a color-coded to-do list. Each color represents a different group of things I need to do, such as household chores and work-related tasks.

I put each sticky note in a line horizontally, corresponding to each day of the week. This helps navigate my day-to-day life as an adult.

• Build a Basic Life Skills Toolkit

Staying organized is key for getting settled into your adult life. Keeping an organized grocery list helps with meal planning.

Making a list of the meals you plan on having will help you create your grocery list.

Paying bills and handling healthcare are newly acquired burdens everyone has to bear.

Making sure you pay your bills on time can make the burden of adulting easier. Researching healthcare plans will make it easier to handle.

• Time Management After College

Creating a weekly schedule is a lifesaver. I have the Google Calendar app on my phone, and it holds my daily schedule.

I get a reminder about all of my events 30 minutes before every activity I put on my calendar.

The thirty-minute reminder gives me enough time to get ready for the event and still be on time.

This has helped me stay organized and avoid getting double-booked. While balancing a job, spending time with friends, and hobbies, my calendar has helped me manage my time.

• Set Boundaries (Yes, Even With Family)

Creating boundaries for your life post-graduation is super helpful. I recommend setting boundaries with work, friends, and even family.

I know plenty of people who moved back home after graduation and have needed to set boundaries with their family.

Moving back home after graduating from college is common, so you don’t have to be stressed out about having to do that.

The best way to set yourself up for success is to create clear boundaries and be upfront about them with the people you spend time with.

Finishing college is a huge accomplishment. I suggest taking it easy when you graduate.

When I say take it easy, I mean, give yourself some time to recover from finals and from saying goodbye to your friends.

You should also give yourself some time to adjust to your new lifestyle before taking on a heavy workload.

Whenever I am in need of a job, I look on Handshake. This platform allows you to input your career interests, salary needs, and part-time or full-time needs.

I have found great internships and job opportunities on this site, so I highly recommend using it for your next search.

• You Don’t Have to Have It All Figured Out

Nobody has their future figured out by the time they graduate. People often change their careers many times before they settle down with their top choice.

Many people graduate from college thinking they know exactly what they want to do, but only a small number of people actually do.

One thing that happens regularly is that people end up in a completely different place with their career than they thought they were going to.

I suggest starting your job search and career with curiosity and not perfection.

• Networking Without Feeling Fake

Making real connections is important for recent college grads. LinkedIn, alumni groups, and mentors are a great way to make real connections.

I recommend being yourself and trusting that you know how to interact with others in a real way.

In my opinion, having pens around is always helpful. Personally, I like having fun and colorful pens because they just make life interesting.

I have found pens to be super helpful because I have found myself in many situations where I need to write something down quickly.

• Keep Learning (Even Outside a Classroom)

Your learning doesn’t have to stop when you graduate from college. There are online courses, certifications, books, and podcasts.

I have taken a few online courses through Brigham Young University. Staying intellectually engaged fuels motivation in life and can further your career.

I like to keep track of my hobbies as a way of reminding myself of the things I like to do. Whenever I find myself with free time, I take a look at my list of current hobbies so I can fill my time with things I enjoy doing.

• It’s Normal to Feel Lost Sometimes

Feeling lost does not mean you are behind. Once you graduate from college, you are only beginning.

Give yourself permission to feel uncertain about the future. In my experience, I have always managed to find my way after getting lost.

• Define Success on Your Terms

Fulfillment, growth, and balance can define your success instead of money or job titles. A meaningful life looks different to everyone. Being successful looks different to everyone.

Some people think success is making a lot of money, while others define success as having the career of their dreams. I suggest thinking about the goals you want to achieve and creating a plan to achieve them.

• Therapy, Journaling, or Coaching Can Help

Getting support is normal and necessary. Many people find themselves struggling after graduation and end up needing to seek support.

Therapy, journaling, and coaching are great ways to seek help. Some people will recommend one of the three over the others, but I recommend a combination of all three.

I keep a list of career goals to look at every time I make a decision about a future job. For me, this is an always-changing list because I keep making new discoveries about things I want to do with my career.
