“I do not regret getting on that plane alone because all the things I’ve experienced has made me who I am today.”
Rosedale, NY
I was eight years old when I first got on a plane and that plane ride changed my life. I remember being all alone during my flight, with the exception of the flight attendant checking on me. When I landed, it was dark and so much colder than my island Jamaica. I’ve never looked back since then. I feel like my experience being an immigrant in New York is no different than actually being born here. Since I came so young, I was able to just fit right in. I attended middle school and high school in the states. I have my friends and close family members to support me, so I can’t say I feel alone. The only thing I will say is difficult about not being from this country is the paperwork. It takes forever to get responses and sometimes things can be at stake for me. Overall,I do not regret getting on that plane alone because all the things I’ve experienced has made me who I am today.
