I Am An Immigrant – Voices

Having grandparents who weren’t born in America definitely showed me a very heavy sense of culture that I would not have had if it weren’t for them. My parents were born in America and therefore always embraced American culture. I speak Spanish because of my grandparents, I know how to cook Hispanic dishes because of my grandmother, and I know a lot about Puerto Rican history and lifestyle because of my grandfather. They are the perfect reminders of why it’s important to not let go of where you came from, because hearing them speak about where they came from is beautiful every time. It’s also a good feeling for me because I feel like I teach them things also about American culture. They are adamant about not letting go of where they came from and what their countries have taught them, but they are also eager to learn new things.
