“When I came there was no time to enjoy my youth, I had to be mom and dad because my parents were still back in my country.”
Queens, NY
This was my very first photo in this country. I didn’t come here as young as my brothers and sisters. When I came there was no time to enjoy my youth, I had to be mom and dad because my parents were still back in my country. It was hard, everyone sounded crazy to me, I didn’t know many words and everything was strange. Of course, I still saw it as the land of opportunity, the land I wanted for my child. I carry this photo with me because it reminds me to never forget how far I have come. My child is now grown and in ways I believe we grew together, her learning how to speak was me learning how to speak. If she won in this country, I knew I was a winner too.
