If you’re anything like me, summer isn’t typically your favorite style season. Cool weather brings with it an air of cozy, crisp vibes and an opportunity to layer and mix and match.
With that being said, the effortless, chic motifs of casual summer wear this year might have me swaying my opinion.
The hot, sizzling summer season is just around the corner, so let’s talk about staying stylish and comfortable in the heat!

What Defines Casual Summer Wear?
First, let’s lay some ground rules. What exactly do we want out of our summer closet?
Well, when you boil it down, it’s actually pretty simple. First and foremost, comfort is key! We want light, breathable fabrics.
Chic, flowy tops and bottoms. And versatile shoes (no, Birkenstocks are not appropriate for your night out on the town).

Dresses

We’ve all seen the Carrie Bradshaws of the world prance through the streets, clad in long flowing maxi dresses and breezy elegance.
Though it may seem so, that look and that fantasy aren’t so hard to achieve.
My favorite way to do that is with maxi dresses. Slinky, satiny, and airy linen dresses are practically everywhere right now.
And more than that, they’re quite literally the most summer-esque article of clothing that comes to mind.
I typically like to sport a long flowy dress when I’m going to a farmers market or the park, or any event where I know I’m gonna be in the sun.
One piece I’ve found myself pulling out of my closet constantly is the Free People Fun in the Sun Maxi. It’s perfectly light, and matched with the right accessories, it can easily carry you from day to night in a pinch.
I personally hate feeling constricted in the heat, but also want to feel feminine and done-up. This dress has the perfect combo of form-fittedness and ease.
Tops

There is nothing I love more than a tiny top or a loose, breezy blouse. Baby-tees have had an absolute boom over the last year, and it’s clear why.
They’re simple, flattering, and add curve and definition to any outfit. Especially when matched with a looser, bigger bottom, a cotton tee or tank top, is to me, top tier.
Additionally, I don’t think there’s anything more timeless and chic than a light-weight linen button down tucked into shorts, or left flowing over a bikini.
I’ve been loving little Tees like Urban Outfitters Amalfi Coast Too Perfect Graphic Baby Tee.
It adds a perfect laid-back yet still put-together vibe to any one of my outfits. It’s one of those tops that you can throw on with anything, whether it’s a long maxi skirt or tight denim shorts.
Bottoms

Speaking of, classic denim shorts, of any fit, are a staple of a warm weather closet. What I love about denim shorts is their versatility.
We all lived through the era of knee-length jorts (moment of silence), and we survived narrowly. But prior to that, they’ve stayed with us through almost every decade and for good reason!
Though I am a Levi’s girl through and through (and honestly, the cutest shorts are home-made cut-offs, in my opinion), Tilly’s has some of the best and widest ranges of denim shorts I’ve seen.
Whether you’re a micro-short or a calf-length jort girl, Tilly’s has you covered. My personal tried and true short is their RSQ Women’s High Rise Midi Shorts.
They’re baggy and breathable in just the right way that still allows for a polished look, and they’re the “perfect meet in the middle” between a short short and a jort.

Lastly, in regard to bottoms, if I ever find myself in a fashion slump, or on a morning I can’t bring myself to really dress it up, I know my maxi skirt has my back.
To own a maxi skirt is to love a maxi skirt. It can dress up any beach look, but with a few tweaks can carry a dinner outfit.
A perfect example of the magic of a maxi skirt is the Terracotta Wrap High-Low Maxi Skirt from Grace and Lace.
What’s super cool about it is that it has the illusion of a wrap skirt while still giving you day-to-day coverage.
I’ve worn it to concerts and parties a ton, and I think it’s perfect for a casual night out. Plus, it’s made of a super stretchy, comfortable fabric that’s perfect for warm weather.
Outerwear

On a cool, summer evening, my favorite thing to grab is a light cardigan or pullover. Especially since crochet and knit fabrics have become so popular, they’re the perfect addition to a summer wardrobe.
I’m a huge fan of layering, and summer doesn’t always account for that, but a breezy cardigan can at least stunt the impulse.
Both pictured items are home-made, but I also have Francesca’s Lisa Crochet Cardigan out for delivery, and I’m super excited to pair it with a cute tank or crop top and shorts, or even just over a bikini!
My favorite thing about crochet items is that they can really be worn anywhere, given how light and breathable they are.
Footwear

Another reason why I’ve found myself struggling to translate my personal style into the summer season in the past is because of the footwear situation.
Because let’s be honest, it really is a situation. With that being said, what will always bring me back to earth is a timeless loafer or flat.
By nature, I’m not typically a sandal girl, but a Mary-Jane or a cut-out loafer mimics a similar breathability.
I also love the vintage nods; a cute sneaker with ankle socks adds to a summer outfit. Of course, none of us wants foot sweat.
But under the right conditions (i.e, hiking, going for a walk, a day at the farmers market, etc), a cute sneaker is a great option.
The ones I’ve been absolutely wearing the most have been Reebok’s Women’s Club C Grounds UK Shoes.
They’re so adorable, and they’re a great dupe for Adidas trainers if you’re looking to save a few bucks.

Beach Day Look

Dressing for the beach is usually an oversized t-shirt and no pants kinda thing for me; however, when I’m looking to elevate my look, there are simple changes that provide the same comfort with a bit more style.
A flowy maxi dress can easily mimic the breathability of a t-shirt, with a bit more elegance. Another great alternative is a big, flowy button-down with shorts.
Nobody does a button-down better than Free People. A perfect example of what I mean by that is their Just Like Me Seersucker Shirt.
For the longest time, I’d always wear a very similar version to this top (pictured), which unfortunately they no longer make.
Long story short, I got a huge stain on my old one and searched everywhere for a new one.
Though it’s not exactly the same, this newer version is super breathable, chic, and one of my favorite pieces to pull when I need to dress up an outfit.
Weekend Brunch

Now, when it comes to a dressier outing like brunch, combining a few of our previously discussed pieces will be just what you need.
A breezy blouse matched with a loose, flowy skirt, paired with a wedge or casual slip-on, is the perfect combination for an effortlessly chic impression.

On a walk along the beach, around the block, or to the ice cream shop, I love a casual button-down tucked into baggy shorts.
Plus, with a sneaker or loafer, this look is so effortless and comfortable.

My favorite combo for an occasion that calls for family-appropriate summer wear is a dressy blouse matched with casual denim shorts or pants, and a classic boot.
Easily, they’ll carry you through the evening and into the night, keeping you both cool and comfortable.

Of course, not every day can be a summer fantasy. Unfortunately, real-life responsibilities strike in the summer, and the last thing you want to add to a day of errands is the complications of putting together an outfit.
On those kinda days, whether it’s grocery shopping or last-minute gift shopping (because for some reason there’s an occasion every week of the summer), a simple tank, a pair of light linen pants, and casual sneakers will have your back.

Must-Have Fabrics for Summer
My personal favorite summer fabric is cotton. It’s versatile and, most importantly, very soft on the skin.
Unfortunately, I am often victimized by the sun, and leave a beach day with a skin color that is similar to that of a tomato.
So, when it comes to a micro short, athletic skirt, tank top, t-shirt, or dress, cotton is my absolute favorite summer fabric.
Linen is easily a close second. Linen button-downs, pants, or even sets, are so effortlessly chic.
And give any summer outfit such a mature, feminine vibe. It’s also such a versatile fabric, and I often find myself grabbing linen for casual and dress wear.
Rayon, particularly shiny rayon, is a great fabric for formal wear. I love the look of a scoop neck rayon top for an evening out, but even for other occasions, it’s such a great light fabric.
Tips for Mixing and Matching

We all know the obvious answers to this question: “Amazon, Urban Outfitters, Free People,” etc. But, if you’re asking me, I think often the perfect summer wear is right under our noses.
Firstly, what’s helped me transition my closet from winter to summer is DIY-ing.
Turning the jeans you haven’t worn in years into cut-offs, sewing an old t-shirt into a halter top, painting a cute design on a plain t-shirt, really, the options are endless.
And in a world of such rampant overconsumption, it’s important to work with what you’ve got from time to time.
Plus, and perhaps this is my ego talking, following up a compliment on something you DIY-ed with “Thanks, I actually made this”, feels awesome!
Thrifting is also a personal favorite way to find summer wear. Especially when summer doesn’t call for super high-quality wool, denim, or knits, like other seasons, it’s super easy to find what you’re looking for at your local thrift store.
Any online or in-person thrift will have what you need if you take the time to look. Of course, local boutiques and thrift stores aren’t universally accessible.
So, in that case, I often turn to online retailers like Depop, eBay, and Poshmark.
A few photos included in this article of full ensembles came from a vintage store called Electrix Vintage, which has both online and in-person shopping opportunities.
Final Thoughts
So, all in all, casual summer wear means finding what works for you. Of course, we all want to look chic in the summer, but most importantly, it’s about feeling comfortable and beautiful in your own skin.
So, have fun with this summer’s fashion, and share your favorite summer looks and tips for staying chic in the heat!
