The Power of Scent and the Importance of Finding the Perfect Perfume

Have you ever wondered how a specific memory you have of a person or place is usually correlated with a specific smell?
Whether it brought back joy, warmth, happiness or peace, there are scientific reasons as to why we relate scents to powerful and calm memories.
A part of our forebrain called the ‘olfactory bulb’ helps us to regulate information regarding the types of smells our nose picks up.
The signal for scents then gets sent off to other parts of our brain, such as the limbic system, that helps to regulate our emotions.
“So, you’re saying that scent works just like our memories?”
In a way – yes!
We have five common senses that we use: sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste.
These same senses are some of the most common methods for us to remember events and other individuals by.
“I have a super confident friend who’s fragrance radiates warmth and her own personality. How can I find my own scent?”
Great question to ask!
One of the most amazing traits that scents carry is that we correlate certain families of scents with personality traits.
For example, if you have a friend who is generally jubilant, lively and wears bright colored clothing to show off her bright personality, it’s safe to assume that she would wear a perfume that makes her smell like the sweetness and lightness of spring or the summer seasons.
Certain categories of fragrances that would represent her joyful personality could be light florals, light oriental and even fruity notes.

When an example like that is given, try applying it to friends and people that you know.
Do you notice this pattern as well? That is a great example of how scents can transform and complete an outfit to help an individual express their personal identity.
Just like personalities, we can group fragrances into certain categories that help us to profile what we scent we like and dislike.
Don’t feel hopeless because I’m here to make the learning journey easier!
With that being said, to fully understand what scents you will gravitate towards, really look in the mirror and look at everything about yourself.
Notice what type of clothing style you wear and what personality traits you have that generally stand out to others and how you want to be perceived by others.
What easily helped me prepare myself to find my own scent was by following the same steps and jotting them down in a notepad. This meant looking for scents that would complement my physical and personality traits.
Once you have a list of traits compiled, start researching what type of fragrance notes you would want to try through searching for their scent families.
Remember that just like clothing, scents can be layered!
The fun in it is finding ways to layer certain scents to curate your signature fragrance.
“How do I know which fragrance notes to pair with and which ones I like?”
This is a marvelous question to ask. In this next section, let me help you narrow down your choices!

How to Choose the Best Notes for Women
Like I mentioned, the beauty of fragrances is that they can easily work together to create a cohesive scent just like how clothes can be layered to create a complex outfit.
When you walk into a perfume store, you’ll notice that a master perfumer may ask you about what scents you like and describe their popular scents based on their top, middle and base notes.
This is the part where many people feel overwhelmed.
“I always hear people say top, middle and base notes in fragrances. What does that mean?”
Top notes for fragrances are initial scents that you’ll smell right away when you spray it on yourself. It’s generally the lightest scent in the perfume itself.
The middle or ‘heart’ notes are the scents that you will smell once the top note fades out. This middle ground scent helps to bridge together the top notes with the base notes.
Base notes are scents that lingers the longest on your skin and remains true to its scent regardless of when the top and middle notes fades.
They work as the backbone of the fragrance to bring the depth to solidify all the different scents within the fragrance itself.
“Great. What are the general fragrance categories then?”
With today’s technology, many new scents are being developed every day.
To make it less hard and more easily digestible, the main categories that we recognize most scents will fall within one or more of these categories:
- Floral
- Woody
- Oriental
- Fresh
- Aquatic

Floral
Floral scents are the ones that we smell when we walk through a calm field of fresh flowers that makes you think of wanting to eat a sweet treat on a nice stroll.
They can range from a quite powdery smell to almost fresh and effortless which makes them great for top and middle notes in fragrances.
Woody
These powerful notes tend to make you think of a dark night in nature with their ability to encapsulate the richness, warmth and creaminess of natural materials, such as wood, resin or even moss.
Interestingly, these notes are commonly used for middle and base notes since they vibrate with longevity.
Oriental
These notes tend to be described in a similar fashion to woody for leaning towards warmthness, but differentiates when it comes to their uniqueness of inclusions of spices.
Certain notes that fall in this group can include patchouli, vanilla and amber smells that make the scent feel more defined and sophisticated.
Fresh
These scents pair well with florals because it helps to ease off the sweetness that florals can draw out with its citrus notes, such as lemon, bergamot and even fresh scents such as herbs.
These notes work well for top and middle notes and most people describe these as ‘comfortable’ smelling scents.
Aquatic
This category reflects notes that feel clean and refreshing, such as cucumber, melon and even light ‘marine-like’ smells.
Most users, like myself, like to think of these scents that would correlate with us standing on a pier overlooking the beaches and water in a calm manner.

With fragrances, mixing and matching is the key in-order to reflect your mood and personality.
For myself, I find that my personality is that of someone who is outspoken, courageous and talkative.
I enjoy taking the lead and going on adventures, but I also enjoy the smell of newly arranged flowers as well.
The scents that I strongly feel most comfortable wearing include oriental scents, such as patchouli, light florals and fresh note fragrances.
To better gauge other common types of personalities, let’s take a spin and see if these following examples are helpful for you to match yourself with certain scent families.
If you are someone who is romantic and enjoys a great night out without being overly sweet in scent form, I recommend looking for rose top notes in your perfume with musk and sandalwood as your middle and base notes with a hint of vanilla to effortlessly bridge together the scents.
This will encapsulate the tinge of depth of the night with the slight natural fragrance of roses that shows your romantic side.
If you are someone who loves doing everyday activities and does not want to smell clean, look towards notes that are aquatic, lightly floral, and oriental.
Keep your categories concise and tight.
These are just some simple examples of how to pair personality and moods with your fragrances to see what you may be most comfortable wearing.
“How do you know where to apply the fragrance and how much to apply?”
You would be relieved to know that before we even consider the number of sprays throughout the day, we need to consider the importance of maintaining hygiene levels first that helps us to enhance the scents.
I recommend making sure that your skin is thoroughly cleansed, and you have applied a non-fragrant lotion to your body first before you consider spraying scents on.
This way, you have a clean and secure surface for your scents to adhere to without mixing with other smells from your worn clothing.

What is most helpful for me is spraying the perfumes on your pulse points: wrists, neck, inner elbows, behind the ears, base of neck, cheek, and back of ankles.
Once you sprayed a bit on those areas, tap the scent in. Do not rub it in or else you will crush the scent.
A little goes a long way so make sure you spray the product close to your skin and not from a distance!
My best tip to recommend for reapplying the scent throughout the day, if you don’t want to bring a big bottle around, would be to carry a perfume traveling case.
These help you bring your favorite fragrances around without bringing the entire bulky bottle!
“Great. I also hear about Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette often. What’s the difference?”
Freet not, I was also once confused about this terminology on perfume jargon. ‘Eau de parfum’ refers to stronger concentration of perfume oil that will carry the scent better and longer throughout the day than that of an ‘eau de toilette’ scent.
“Okay, perfect. What are some of the most popular fragrances that other women are wearing?”
This is a fun question to ask because popular scents rotate with time. In 2025, here is a list of what I believe are the best fragrances for women!

Trends in Women’s Fragrances in 2025
In 2025, there are many trends that are sweeping the fragrance world. Some of the most popular trends in scents involve the questioning of ethics and sustainability, rise in unisex scents, and natural ingredients.
For those who love perfume, did you know that ‘natural musk’ was a popular ingredient in vintage perfumes that were categorized as unethical and eventually unsustainable by the late 1990s?
The scent originates from the secretions of civet cats and the process of extracting the liquid was extremely unethical in regard to animal welfare.
Since then, ingredients in modern perfumes come from flowers and synthetic compounds that replicate scents that are difficult to source.
There are many questions surrounding the ethicality of fragrance-making and their packaging considering the inclusion of harmful chemicals to replace animal musks, glass packaging embedded with certain non-recyclable parts and the number of emissions released during the process of curating fragrances for the global market.
Due to the appalling reactions from consumers once they figured out the news about perfume markets, there is a growing trend in gender-less scents that are made with more naturally inspired scents and are somewhat more sustainable than the packaging we see today in commercials.
You’d be happy to know that in 2025, we are gravitating towards neutral and natural scents that have to do less with ‘musk’ base scents and more-so refreshing and almost edible-noted scents. Some of the rising popular notes include vanilla, caramel, pistachio, maple syrup.
Fortunately for those who worry about their favorite scents growing out of fashion, don’t feel miserable because there are scents that remain timeless and favorites for a reason.

Some of the most beloved brands that sell the most popular scents that fall within this refreshing and gender-neutral category would be Jo Malone, Byreoo, Chanel, Lancome.
If you noticed from the list and made it this far into the article, you may be delighted to know that Jo Malone’s English Pear and Freesia Eau de Parfum is a unisex scent that perfectly encapsulates this new trend.
Remarkably, timeless scents that remain popular without having to follow that trend are Dior’s Miss Dior Eau de Parfum and Chanel No.5 Eau de Parfum.
With that being said, using the most popular fragrance may not always be the most thrilling solution to finding the perfect scent for you. With different moods and seasons, your favorite perfume could be on the rotation block and that’s perfectly okay!
Now that you know how to find the perfect scents to try next, let’s figure out where to apply them to make them last the longest!

Tips for Maximizing Your Fragrance

“Where should I apply perfumes to make it last long?”
Before we consider which spots to apply the scent to, remember that it is important to make sure that you have recently showered and applied on a thin layer of unscented moisturizer.
This way, the perfume that will apply afterwards is primed and ready to last longer.
To apply perfume correctly and ensure their wearing power, we want to focus on spraying them on areas where we can feel our pulses the best. These spots are known as our ‘pulse points’.
Pulse points areas are designated to be your inner wrists, neck region, behind your ears and the insides of your elbows.
I personally like to spray my perfumes close to the skin in those areas which I find leaves the longest impression of my perfume for others.
I also like spraying them on the back of my elbows.
A secret spot to make you smell delicious on date-night-out if you’re wearing pants, dresses or skirts that are above your ankles is to spray a tiny bit there as well. This way, the smell will linger wherever you go.
Once you sprayed the scent on these recommended areas, dab the product in. Do not rub it!
If you rub the product, it can crush the scent notes. We don’t want that to happen.
However, one of the best parts about applying perfume is that you are able to layer your scents.
If you spray a perfume that has a muskier scent, you can easily apply a light floral on top of the same spots to create a more complex scent.
My favorite trick is to apply a woody perfume or cologne as my first layer and follow up with a travel size light floral in my bag.
This way, my scent is customized to my own signature scent, and I can ensure that I smell great throughout the day.

“How should I store my perfumes to prolong their scents?”
Taking care of your perfumes is as equally important as investing in quality perfumes.
We want to be able to use as much of it as we can to get our money’s worth, which is why I’m here to tell you powerful tips and tricks to keep their longevity intact!
The best way you can store your perfume to make sure they last as long as they can is to store them in a dry, dark and cool area.
I find that storing them in a tight lid container or drawer is best when it comes to prolonging their longevity.

Just like picking by staple pieces for your wardrobe, picking the best scents for women, and yourself, will take time and patience.
Remember that to find the best scents, really look at yourself in the mirror and observe the season to know what types of scents you believe will work with you.
Use as many samples as it will take for you to find a scent that you can wear with confidence and certainty.
Perfume scents serve as a transformative step for you to curate your own self to how others can perceive you as.
The magic in curating a scent is layering them on clean skin and making sure to bring a travel size bottle of it around with you to continuously refresh the scent.
Similar to how accessories can complete an outfit, wearing your signature scent can bring out a layer of wholeness and complexity to your aesthetic that will leave impressions on others.
Remember, scent is a powerful tool that can be utilized to bring out the best in everyone and to help you feel like your most amazing self.
