Unlock the powerful benefits of facial serum to boost hydration, reduce signs of aging, and enhance your daily skincare routine for glowing, youthful skin.

This post probably contains affiliate links. Our full disclosure is long, but you can find it here.
Have you ever looked at your skin in the mirror and thought, “Gosh, she’s seen better days?” Let me tell you – you’re not the only one who’s had a tinge of hopelessness.
When looking at your skincare lineup, do you notice if you have any facial serums? If the answer is no, here’s the perfect time for me to tell you all about the life-changing benefits of facial serum!
During the 1980s, these magic-in-a-bottle began popping up in markets. Skincare businesses took off once women became interested in seeing what these products could do for them.
Back in the day, Estee Lauder, Clinique, and even L’Oréal Paris serums were at the forefront of this trend.
Some you might even remember seeing these name-brand trinkets on your mom’s shelves in the bathroom.
Serum’s claim to fame is its effectiveness at alleviating specific skin concerns.
With their ability to have highly concentrated ingredients, users saw surprising improvements with daily usage.
From having dry skin, dull skin, acne-prone skin, to oily and aging skin – all these concerns can be easily tackled by finding your best facial serum.
I’m sure many of us have passed skincare aisles with key ingredients being hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and ones that mention AHAs.
“Well, what does all that mean?”
I can tell you that you’re in the right place to find out if you want your skin glowing from the inside out.
Ready to delightfully level up your skincare game? Let’s dive into the powerful benefits of facial serums that’ll leave you not only tingling with excitement, but your skin, too!

What Is a Facial Serum?

“So, what’s this so-called magic-sold-in-a-bottle liquid?”
This tiny trinket bottle holds the answers that tackle several skincare problems. Let me explain.
A serum’s purpose is to go on your skin in a lightweight manner while absorbing quickly into the layers underneath.
It has the ability to pack a punch since the ingredients list includes active ingredients that usually have higher concentrations than those of your typical skincare bottle.
Most commonly used to treat dry skin concerns, it can also be found to help brighten skin, reduce anti-aging, fight acne, calm skin levels, and so much more.
Now the question becomes, “So when should I start using a serum?”
Much like puberty, it really depends on what stage your skin is in and if your skin is prepared to handle active ingredients.
From many dermatologists’ points of view, entering your twenties is easily the best time to start including a serum bottle in the mix.
Again, trial and error are best, but I do caution sensitive skin users and people under the age of 18.
The best way to find out if a product is too abrasive would be to dab a bit of product on the neck region and see how it reacts before using it on your face.
“Why should I include a serum when I already have a moisturizer?”
If your daily skin routine is effective but is not alleviating a specific concern that your overall skin layer is facing, it may be time to try a serum.
I used to be a non-believer in serums because I saw them as an extra step that usually would entail a big financial investment.
Fortunately, skincare has become easily accessible and there is a variety in price ranges.
If splurging on a serum is something you’re worried about, don’t be devastated because I will walk you through how to pick a serum based mainly on the ingredients list later on in this article.
“Ok, so where do I place serums in my skincare routine?”
This is a great question to ask yourself because it’s not a traditional skincare step many people are knowledgeable of.
For best usage, I recommend using serums after your cleanser and before your lotion.
I’ve tested this step procedure and it’s proven to give me the most effective transformative results.
To make the step of deciding facial serums easier for you, I have broken down a list in this next section, so don’t feel overwhelmed!

• Deep Hydration Without Heaviness
How It Works:
Specific ingredients work as humectants, which draw moisture from the air and help to retain moisture within the deeper skin layers.
This helps to keep your skin’s pH levels balanced without being overly hydrated or overly dry.
Real-World Results:
I’ve been an avid user of both of these combinations of ingredients because I have oily skin.
I’m unable to use thick moisturizers, so I opted for a hyaluronic and glycerin serum in the morning and nighttime to keep my oily skin from producing more oils throughout the day – trust me, I’ve never gone back.
Best Ingredients to Look For:
Hyaluronic acid and glycerin
Quick Tip:
When applying this serum, make sure that your face is damp but not completely dry. Pat the face into areas where you usually get dry and make sure it dries fully before proceeding with your next skincare step.
• Boosts Skin Radiance and Glow
How It Works:
Certain ingredients work by inhibiting melanin production and help to calm hyperpigmentation. This antioxidant serves to fight free radicals, resulting in an even and brighter complexion with routine usage.
Real-World Results:
My friend Nicole and I have been active users of vitamin C and niacinamide. We both have combination skin, and acne is a common occurrence.
After we started using these ingredients twice a day, our acne scars faded extremely quickly, and it left our skin feeling smooth, comfortable, and radiant!
Best Ingredients to Look For:
Vitamin C and niacinamide for brightness
Quick Tip:
I like to use this right after my face is washed or right after I use my toner. These serums work best with little to no barriers between your skincare layers.
• Enhances Skin Firmness and Elasticity
How It Works:
Specific ingredients that address skin firmness help to maintain skin elasticity as well.
These ingredients work as signaling molecules that allow for skin cells to perform certain functions that help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and tighten pores over time.
Real-World Results:
For folks like my mom and grandma, this is one of those products that they believed was the most helpful at enhancing their skin’s firmness.
I saw a huge difference when they both started applying them during the nighttime, and saw an immense difference in skin elasticity within a month.
Best Ingredients to Look For:
Peptides and collagen boosters
Quick Tip:
Make sure to use these serums once a day first before you amp up how often you choose to use them. I prefer using it during the nighttime to see the most difference, coupled with good sleep.
• Targets Dark Spots and Hyperpigmentation
How It Works:
Ingredients help to target these concerns by inhibiting the skin’s melanin production levels.
This means that any dark spots on the skin can quickly recover with frequent usage of these serums because they help the target spots to fade more efficiently compared to only wearing sunscreen and lotion.
Real-World Results:
My grandma is a huge fan of alpha arbutin since she has dry skin and had concerns about dark sunspots. After she started using alpha arbutin, it took away her discoloration effectively, and she’s been asking me to replenish her stock ever since.
Best Ingredients to Look For:
Licorice root extract, Vitamin C, alpha arbutin
Quick Tip:
This product is suitable for both the daytime and nighttime and should be the second or third step within your skincare routine. Pair this with a hyaluronic acid or a peptide and see how your skin can become its most amazing self!
• Minimizes Pores and Improves Skin Texture
How It Works:
Alpha Hydroxy Acids, better known as AHAs, are water-soluble acids that chemically exfoliate the top layer of skin to remove dead skin cells.
Beta Hydroxy Acids, better known as BHAs, are acids that can penetrate deeper into the pores to target acne breakouts from the root, blackheads, and rough skin textures.
Real-World Results:
Usually, dads aren’t at the forefront of skincare advocates, however, my dad is since he’s had a long history of big pores and acne scars.
He may not be a big fan of skincare, but his only skincare product is an AHA serum that helped to minimize his pores.
Best Ingredients to Look For:
AHAs, BHAs, Lactic Acid.
Quick Tip:
When using products that contain these ingredients, I make sure that the product has set deeply into my skin before moving on to the rest of my skincare routine. This way, I make sure that no other ingredients will interfere with these ingredients.

• Fights Premature Aging and Fine Lines
How It Works:
Ingredients that target these concerns can increase your cell turnover rate, which, in turn, helps to reveal a new layer of skin from underneath the first layer.
By plumping the skin’s surface texture, it scientifically stimulates the collagen production to strengthen and firm the skin, leading to a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Real-World Results:
My mom has been on a skin journey ever since she immigrated from Vietnam over 20 years ago. The only thing that helped her combat her acne was using retinol to treat her stubborn acne and peptides to help refine her premature wrinkles.
Best Ingredients to Look For:
Retinol, Peptides, Antioxidants
Quick Tip:
When using strong amounts of retinol, make sure to use it during the nighttime in conjunction with lotion. Do not mix your retinols with other peptides and antioxidants because it can overwhelm your skin and its pH levels.
• Calms Redness and Soothes Sensitive Skin
How It Works:
Serums that calm sensitive skin types or aggravated skin have anti-inflammatory, soothing, and wound-healing properties. These serums are meant to calm your skin’s pH levels as well.
Real-World Results:
This is one of those gentle products that everyone can use. My younger sister loves using aloe vera serums in the spring and summer to combat her rosacea.
Best Ingredients to Look For:
Aloe vera, chamomile, centella asiatica.
Quick Tip:
When using these serums, make sure that you apply them to your neck first to test them! Sometimes products can cause sensitivity even if they state they’re made for sensitive skin.
• Combats Acne and Breakouts
How It Works:
Typically, Beta-hydroxy acid is a keratolytic, which means it breaks down dead skin cells that cause clogged pores, acne formations, and skin inflammation.
Other acids that promote clearing breakouts are found to be antibacterial and antimicrobial, which kill certain bacteria, like Curtobacterium acne.
Real-World Results:
My sister, my best friend, and I use this serum day and night. We all deal with hormonal and genetically related factors that contribute to oily skin and acne, which these serums help tame.
Best Ingredients to Look For:
Salicylic acid, tea tree oil, niacinamide
Quick Tip:
When applying these products, I like to make sure that I use a tiny drop once a day first. For some skin types, it may work best if the amount of product used is small because it can be extremely potent and lead to dry skin.
• Delivers Potent Antioxidant Protection
How It Works:
Similar to vitamin C, these acids that emphasize antioxidant protection help to neutralize free radicals and protect your skin from environmental stressors, such as UV protection and pollution.
With their ability to enhance your body’s natural level of antioxidant enzymes, they help to ensure a layer of hydration.
Real-World Results:
My partner doesn’t like the thought of religiously applying skincare, but he does hate the thought of growing wrinkly.
He’s big on ‘be natural’ because his skin is quite sensitive, but he has been using vitamin E serums every morning for easily over three years, if that says anything.
Best Ingredients to Look For:
Resveratrol, Vitamin E, green tea
Quick Tip:
When using serums with these ingredients, I highly recommend adding a layer of sunscreen and reapplying as often as you can. This way, you are protecting your skincare and skin from sun damage!
• Prep Skin for Better Product Absorption
How It Works:
After washing your clean, apply your skincare and serums immediately. When your skin is slightly damp and pores still slightly fresh and open, your products will latch onto that remaining moisturizer and amplify your serums.
Real-World Results:
If I’m not living proof of how serums changed my skin, trust in the reviews that my closest friends and family have told me. Everyone’s skin is different, which is why specific products will work for people with different skin types.
Quick Tip:
If you wear makeup and or eye makeup, I recommend starting with an oil cleanser first before going in with an oiled-up cotton pad to remove your eye makeup.
Follow up with a gentle facial cleanser and dab your skin with a clean towel to set up for the best foundation for your skin care to adhere to!
“Great! Now I’m stuck on picking which serums to try because there are so many options.”
Don’t you feel hopeless because I got a life-changing list fixed up and already for you in this next section!

How to Choose the Right Serum for Your Skin Type
Serums are a life-changing investment if you’re looking for life-changing results.
On the same note, if you want to improve the current state of your skin, you must know what skin type you have first.
Let me break down what each skin type needs and what serums I believe will work best for you!
Normal Skin
- Appearance: Your skin is usually balanced and does not feel dry or oily on an average day. You may have little to no sensitivity concerns as well.
Oily Skin:
- Appearance: Your skin may feel greasy and look oily throughout the day. You may also experience some form of breakouts around your T-zone with noticeably sized pores.
Dry Skin:
- Appearance: Your skin tends to feel as if it may be hard and lacking moisture. Sometimes it may feel cracked and look flaky, paired with slight itchiness.
Sensitive Skin:
- Appearance: You may experience patches of rosacea or red patches. When you use certain facial products, they produce a tingling sensation that can sometimes lead to hives or even rashes.
Combination skin:
- Appearance: Your skin may carry multiple characteristics of appearance from the above-mentioned categories, and that’s perfectly normal! What you have is called combination skin, and it just means that your skin concerns may cover more than one category.
Just know that it’s perfectly normal if your skin does not stay consistent with what category it falls in because a lot of factors can change it!

Normal Skin Serum Recommendations

• The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
Why you should use it:
This serum was recommended to me by my closest friend Nicole, and we have the same issues regarding a lack of moisture in our skin.
I felt the need to invest in a lightweight serum that could double up as my moisturizer without extra heaviness, which was one of the big selling points for this serum.
Its main benefits include the 10% of hyaluronic acid paired with B5, a vitamin that helps to regulate stress hormones within our bodies.
I truly believe this product helped to maintain my skin’s hydration levels, especially in the summers when I need that extra moisture without an extra layer of lotion.
However, this product would not be best for people with sensitive skin. The high amount of hyaluronic acid may cause redness and irritation.
Additionally, with this product’s price point standing at $9.90, this product is a steal for all users, from professional serum users to beginners.
You must use this product if you want to ensure that your skin barrier remains hydrated and soft throughout the entire day.
• Jumiso All Day Vitamin Serum, Brightening and Balancing Facial Serum
Why you should use it:
Through scrolling on TikTok, I heard many asian influencers rave about this vitamin C serum. I was interested in buying a vitamin C that was lightweight, user-friendly, and non-sticky.
My dermatologist recommended that I invest in a vitamin C serum since I had a lot of acne scarring. The key ingredients that this product has include vitamin tree extract that helps alleviate skin dullness and a small percentage of niacinamide acid.
One of the biggest things this serum remedied for me was acne-scarring and a dull complexion, and it helped my cells’ turnover rate rapidly increase. If there was one improvement to be made, it would be the light color packaging because vitamin C serums can oxidize quickly if it touches sunlight.
However, I would not recommend this product for those who are experiencing active acne, as it can irritate the skin more.
You should invest in this product if you want to even out skin texture and or want an extra boost of radiance throughout your day.
Oily Skin Serum Recommendations

• Good Molecules Niacinamide Serum
Why you should use it:
I found out about this serum through my friend Nicole as well. She has recently discovered that her skin was becoming oily in the summer, and this product helped her to control her sebum production.
Knowing myself, I looked into it and was interested in buying it to combat my overall oily skin production, especially in my T-zone.
The main features of this product that interested me were the 10% niacinamide paired with the vitamin B3, which helps tame and control oil production.
I saw the most drastic difference once I started applying a couple of drops to my morning routine religiously for a month. My textured skin felt smoother, and I was no longer getting shiny every couple of hours after going outside.
I must say, though, that for those who have dry or sensitive skin, please be careful. Excessive use can lead to drying out the skin and eczema. My only con with this product is that sometimes I can feel as if the 10% of niacinamide could be too high a concentration for me, otherwise, it works perfectly.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive product that will easily control your oil production, this product is worth a try.
• IUNIK Tea Tree 67% Relieving Vegan Facial Serum
Why you should use it:
I found out about this serum on Amazon when The Body Shop discontinued my favorite tea tree oil serum. I needed something as effective for spot control and fungal acne, and this was the best seller, for good reason.
I felt like I needed to purchase this product because my skin does go through phases where I get waves of acne, especially near my period. With the product highlighting its best-selling points, such as tea tree oil leaf water and centella asiatica leaf water, I knew this serum was going to tame, calm, and minimize my pores all in one go.
For me, I’ve noticed that it works best to combat my cystic acne and rosacea when I use it during the day and at night. However, I also have dry skin, which can be a problem if I use it in the winter.
I would recommend my dry skin girls to steer away from this problem as it could emphasize the dryness and flakiness of your skin if you do use it often — especially in the winter.
For serum to be over 1 fluid oz and weighing at $16.99, this is a good investment that won’t break your bank. Consider trying this serum if you have multiple concerns regarding acne and rosacea splotches – like me!

• La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Why you should use it:
My grandma doesn’t use many products, but this is one that I find she reaches for often in her skincare shelf. I initially gifted this product to her because I had a friend who had flaky skin, and she said this product saved her.
My grandma complains about tight skin in spring and winter, which is why I opted for this product. With the key ingredients being vitamin B5 and hyaluronic acid, I knew that it would help to plump up her skin well and add a moisturizing layer without irritating her skin.
From consistent use, my grandma likes to tell me that she applies less moisturizer after using this product often, and her skin feels extremely supple and experiences no breakouts.
However, she does mention that she wishes there were more soothing benefits within its ingredient list outside of just B5 and hyaluronic acid.
This product is suitable for all skin types because it contains non-comedogenic ingredients. If you are wary of scented products, you may want to choose a different serum.
If you are looking to invest in a quality serum that works for all skin types, this serum should be on your wishlist.
• Tirtir SOS Serum
Why you should use it:
My mom found this product through Facebook because she has been recently dealing with fine lines and wanted a product to combat hydration and the dryness that comes with aging.
She felt the need to purchase this product because she had seen video reviews from previous users online that shared their positive experience with the product.
The main features of the product include collagen and hyaluronic acid alongside vitamin-based ingredients.
The most noticeable difference she saw was plumper cheeks and less deepened crows feet near the ends of her eyes after a couple of weeks of using it.
She reiterates that she’ll keep using it at night for an extra boost of elasticity while she is sleeping and nourishing her skin from the inside out.
She does note that one aspect that she wishes the serum could improve on would be the applicator. She wishes it were a doe-foot applicator so she could apply it to specific parts of her face more easily.
For those who are younger, this product may not be the most suitable for your skin type, considering that it could overwhelm the skin with too much collagen.
She recommends this product to users who are looking for a simple yet effective remedy for reviving skin elasticity and those who are on the drier side.
Sensitive Skin Serum Recommendations

• Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum
Why you should use it:
This serum was recommended to me by a Korean skin care guru who raved about the gentleness of this product with its powers to alleviate dry skin concerns.
I knew that my boyfriend wasn’t adamant about using a lot of products, so I thought this one product would be simple and effective for him to integrate into his morning and nighttime routine.
The main features that this product promises to target include skin redness and enhancing skin glow with the inclusion of niacinamide, rice water, and alpha-arbutin.
I purchased this as a gift for my boyfriend with extremely dry skin and a sensitive skin type, and it leaves his skin buttery soft and plumped, even after 48 hours of usage.
One aspect of this product that he wished could’ve been done better would be the size of the bottle.
For people with bigger hands, like himself, he wishes the applicator stick were bigger and wider to accommodate his hands.
This serum would not be beneficial for those who are experiencing acne purges, as it will not contain ingredients to treat all forms of fungal acne or cystic acne.
Overall, I would recommend this product for those who want to start using a serum that serves multiple purposes — from skin redness and dryness.
• ANUA Rice Ceramide 7 Hydrating Barrier Serum
Why you should use it:
My friend Kieli was first introduced to this product by me because I heard from my good friend that this product was amazing for soothing skin.
I knew that Kieli had extremely sensitive skin and that she could only use non-fragrance items, which led me to give her this.
The main features that the serum highlighted included its ability to hydrate, stabilize the skin barrier, and give the skin overall a glowy effect.
The ingredients it’s known for include rice water extract, ceramides, vitamin C, and even hyaluronic acid.
The most noticeable change Kieli saw within daily usage was that her bumpy skin texture went away.
However, she does wish the bottle were made into an eye drop tube form instead of a pump because she doesn’t like contaminating the lid with dried-up product.
However, for anyone who has acne-related concerns, the ingredients list for this serum may not serve well to target your fungal acne concerns.
With this product running you $17.00 for one, it is worth your bank because there are not many non-comedogenic serums that are also fragrance free.
I would recommend this to anyone who has extremely sensitive skin to normal skin that wants to amp up their simple skincare game.

• SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Asiatica Ampoule Facial Serum
Why you should use it:
I found this serum through my friend Nhu, who is a Korean skincare enthusiast. Knowing that she has dry and oily skin like mine, I was deeply intrigued by how it works to target her skin concerns.
I purchased it myself to see if it would give me the same results, as in– alleviate my rosacea, plump up my skin, and add an extra layer of moisture during the winter.
The main feature of this product is its ability to be non-sticky and hydrating while soothing acne-prone and sensitive skin concerns.
Not only does the ingredients list contain madecassoside compounds for brightening, but Centella Asiatica to tackle skin redness as well.
This serum is one of my top serums for effectiveness because I saw a difference in my skin plumping up and redness disappearing within three weeks of consistent usage.
I should mention that if there was one thing I would change about it, it would be that this would not be suitable for those who have active acne.
Price-wise, I do believe $13.76 is an average price point for this product and its overall effectiveness. If you are a student on a budget, I do believe this would be a bit of an investment.
On the bright side, I would highly recommend this for my girls who have combination skin concerns and want an extra boost of glow and plump when they have an event to go to.
• Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum Green Tea
Why you should use it:
My mom is also a big fan of this serum. Much like the Tirtir serum from earlier, my mom found this serum through Facebook reviewers as she saw how drastic the difference it made for their acne-prone skin.
The main ingredients in this product that made her gravitate towards it included green tea extract and mugwort extract, which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties.
The biggest impact it had for her was taking away her hyperpigmentation from previous acne scars, and how it made her skin feel smoother overall.
However, she does wish that the product were more viscous because she likes a thicker serum formulation.
Another note, this serum is usable for all skin types.
With it being sold for $16.89, she does believe that its ingredients list is jam-packed with all the ingredients that alleviate her skin concerns, making it worthwhile for her.
She would recommend it to both men and women who want to keep their skin calm and youthful, especially if they are exposed to the sun often and have dark acne scarring.

Remember that high-quality skin care is not always the most expensive bottle on the market, so don’t feel depressed!
I have tried numerous high-end products and fair-priced products in my lifetime to tell you that the shorter and cleaner the ingredient list, the better the outcome will be for your wallet and your skin.
On another note, the application of serums is also highly important to consider.
I know you might have questions about how to store it, apply it, and many more questions, which is why I’ve made a quick overview of helpful answers for you, so keep on reading to find
Tips to Maximize Serum Benefits

When it comes to buying a product that you hope will work well, you must also consider how to apply it effectively.
Keep in mind that serums are potent, which is why a couple of drops can go a long way. Start by applying the product to the tips of your fingers and gently distributing it evenly onto your face.
Use light tapping motions and do not rub it into your skin for the most effective results!
“Well, where should I keep my serums?”
I like to treat my serums as if they’re the most expensive purse I own. This is why I keep it out of the light and in a dry environment where no dust or bacteria can reach it.
The best way to see results is to stay consistent in usage. Much like if you have a workout goal, you won’t wake up to find instant results, right?
“Well, how long should I use it to see results?”
Everyone’s skin type and concerns are on different levels, which is why I recommend at least sticking with the same serums and skincare routine for a month so you can delightfully see your skin making progress.
For myself, I find that I start noticing differences in my skin by the end of the second or third week of usage. I like to use my serums once to twice a day.
“I’ve heard people use certain serums during the day and the night. Is that true?”
Yes! I like to use retinols and chemical agents meant to exfoliate my skin during the nighttime.
The reason is that these ingredients are more sensitive to UV and their effectiveness might decrease with exposure to it.
What I can say is that with trial and error, you will find the perfect and most transformative combinations of serums that work best for you.
Let’s recap what we have just learned about the delightful world of serums!
