 Introduction to Beauty

Makeup products have been traced back to as far as the ancient Egyptian times. Though it may not be in the form of concealer tubes and lipstick tubes as we may see now, it served a powerful purpose for women in the ancient world.

Religion helped to shape standards of beauty as time went on. What started as primarily a luxury product for courtesans and queens in the old world is now capitalized upon and is available at a touch of a button on your phone or easily accessible through drugstores.

Shifting into the modern day, you might be thrilled to know that some of the longest standing known name brands we see today in screens are: Estee Lauder, Revlon, Soap and Glory.

The modern person uses makeup to not only enhance their own features but uses it as a means to express herself.

Now let’s find out how to alleviate your own features with a couple quick tricks!

My Own Experience with Beauty

I have had my own share of do’s and don’t with makeup. The reality is that not every product purchased has worked out exactly how I wanted them to. I know that this is not only my reality but many others as well.

“Why?” you ask? It’s because not everyone’s skin is going to react the same way to each product. It really takes time to understand what products work for me based on understanding what my skin needs and what it wants.

I can definitely feel more comfortable now than 8 years ago when I first started makeup, but that’s because I tried many products and got recommendations from friends and family.

The most important tip I can give anyone is to really listen to what your skin needs and prefers. This goes for makeup and skincare as well, regardless of if you’re a beginner at makeup or a pro.

Before you even think about putting on that smidget of foundation or concealer, remember that prepping your skin is as equally important as covering it with makeup.

Skincare is one of the biggest trends right now which got popularized globally thanks to South Korea and K-Pop idols who are influencers. The 10-step-skincare routine has had a strong grasp on many people, and I fell victim to it as well.

The point of the trend is to emphasize the importance of how maintaining your skin barrier can lead to creating a flawless canvas for any products layered on top later on. This is a vital step for makeup enthusiasts as well as beginners at makeup.

Skincare serves as a transformative step for many beauty enthusiasts to have their makeup sit flawlessly throughout the day.

You’d be surprised to know that some may even skip their primer and go directly into their makeup with a useful skincare routine – like myself.

Now let’s go on to the tips and tricks!

 Base Makeup

When you look in the mirror, really look at what you prefer to enhance. If you have a gorgeous complexion and feel like you want to cover a little bit of your eye-bags, that’s perfectly fine.

Reaching for a concealer or tinted moisturizer is a perfect way to perfect your complexion.

Remember that less is more.

When I started doing makeup as a beginner, the one thing I believe I really got right was that we can always start out with light coverage products and add more if we needed to.

If this brings relief to anyone, the day-to-day women – like myself – may prefer makeup that is seen more natural with light enhancements of color.

Stick to the basics. You can add more details once you become more comfortable.

You can always add more, not take away. This is especially important for those who are makeup beginners.

One of the biggest things that I did get wrong in the beginning of my makeup journey that I highly urge others to focus on is understanding your complexion shade.

People come in all forms of shapes so it only makes sense that everyone’s skin tone will be different as well so don’t feel devastated if your first foundation and concealer are not your exact shade.

There are 4 main undertones to consider when purchasing concealers and foundations. Here’s a simple way to tell which of the following undertones you have:

  • Warm Tone
  • Cool Tone
  • Neutral Tone
  • Olive Tone

  • Warm Tone

Look at your wrist and see what color veins are more apparent. If you see green and olive veins, you most likely have warm undertones.

  • Cool Tone

When you look at your wrist, you will see purple and blue vines. This means you’re most likely cool undertones.

  • Neutral Tone

If you have noticeable blue and green veins, you will pull towards more neutral undertone products.

  • Olive Tone

If your veins on your wrist appear to seem blue or a mix between blue and green, you may have an olive undertone.

Outside of what skin imperfections that you want to improve through coverage, be sure to consider what skin type you have.

There are many forms of concealers and foundations that exist on the market that cater towards oily, dry, combination, normal and sensitive skin.

From my own experience as an oily skin turned dry skin girl, I felt that foundations worked best for my skin that had ingredients like niacinamide.

In the winter, my skin prefers more hydration, so I lean into hydrating liquid-based foundations with ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, that helps to retain moisture in my skin.

Once you have chosen your base makeup, be sure to pick up either a trusty foundation brush, sponge or use your built-in fingers and practice blending in the products such as light coverage base products!

Don’t forget to invest in a setting spray to keep that makeup lasting all day!

A compact powder is also helpful for my oily skin girls to keep that skin looking fresh throughout the day.

Choose a blush that has the same undertone as your skin to draw out the cohesive color palette of your look. I like to make my makeup look well by using my lipstick as my blush.

Once you have a base, let’s consider your eye makeup.

Eye Makeup

When looking into eye makeup, keep it simple and classy. Keep a small handful of brushes on your vanity.

Really map out how much eyelid space you have and what type of eye shape you have. Remember that the same makeup look will not look exactly like how the magazines will portray it to so it may be hard to  nail down in the first couple attempts.

The best tip I can give here is start with a skin-like shade that is about one shade or two darker than your skin tone.

“How do I know which palette to select?”

Stick to something that is within your budget. Look for brands that have good reviews with simple shades. The best method is to try out products that won’t break your bank but feel like a good investment.

My personal favorites are eyeshadow palettes from the Sephora collection that have nude tones and the Colourpop palettes. They are fair price with great color payoff.

What works best for me and my girlfriends with different skin tones are anything that includes 4 to 8 color eyeshadow nude colors. This ensures that your colors choices remain timeless and classy.

“What about mascara?”

Mascara is great when it comes to enhancing your eyes. If you want an extra widening effect to make your eyes stand out, invest in a mascara that helps to elongate those lashes while keeping them lifted, long and lucious.

My favorite brand that saves me a trip to the bank would be the Essence line. It’s easily accessible at any drugstore that has a variety of formulations to meet a wide range of needs.

An essential part of keeping your lashes from drooping is investing in a quality eyelash curler. Once you decide on which one has a curvature closest to your eye shape, try it out!

Eyeliner is a great addition to helping to elongate your eye shape. However, I would say it’s not something that is necessary for all beginner makeup users.

For an everyday quick 10-to-15-minute makeup look, you can go with skipping the eyeliner.

Now let’s get onto the most fun part of makeup that will tie your entire makeup look together. Lip products!

LIPS

The most effortless way to tie together your entire makeup look would be choosing your perfect lip products.

Remember that your lips need to be prepped well before you consider lipstick. Just like how your face needs moisturizers, your lips also require prep work.

Invest in a good chapstick or two to have with you no matter where you go to prolong the staying power of your lipstick.

“I feel overwhelmed with the amount of lipstick options. How do I know which colors work best for me?”

My best advice is to pick your lipstick shades that carry the same undertones as your foundation and concealers.

It’s preferable to start experimenting by sticking with a color that’s most similar to your natural lip color since it will help you to enhance the natural color of your own lips.

With my own experience of lip products when I was a beginner at makeup and until now, I prefer a color that’s most similar to my natural lip shade with a slight pop of brightening effect. This is what the makeup gurus call ‘my lips but better’ shades.

“Okay, but what about formula and type of lipstick?”

I believe a comfortable satin, gloss or stain is the best formulation to go with. The reason why is because these are the easiest to reapply without fear of messing up the color and they dry out your lips out the least compared to other formulations throughout the day.

Some of my favorite lip products that have various shades for all skin tones are: Maybelline Lifter Gloss, Romand Juicy Lasting Tint, MAC Sleek Satin Lipstick.

With all forms of makeup, feel free to try various formulations to figure out what combinations you prefer the most. You are more than welcomed to try matte lipstick and other formulas because it really has to do with personal preference.

“So is lipstick the last part of the makeup look?”

In a way, yes and no. Now let me explain what options you can consider next to include in your final part of your makeup look.

Take a look in the mirror and see your own work. If you have a little bit more time, you can feel free to do some touch-ups to areas of your makeup that will help you feel your most amazing for the rest of the day.

I would also like to say that ensuring that your makeup lasts throughout the day is important as well if you want to do the least amount of touch-ups possible.

“How do I make that happen?”

The magic answer lies in a good setting spray and or setting powder. ‘Setting’ refers to the act of ensuring that your makeup would budge throughout the day.

Loose setting powder is popular to use. Dust a bit around the areas that you tend to crease and get oily to set your makeup in place for the day.

When you invest in a good setting spray, it will also make all the powder products and base makeup emulsify within the skin to create an even and natural look.

Remember that finding the right combinations of products will take time and practice.

Not everyone is going to have a perfect makeup look and routine done in one go so don’t feel hopeless.

Take some of these tips and test them out to see how helpful they are.

Do what makes you happy regardless of if you are doing makeup as a beginner or a pro. good luck!
