“Self-expression is one of the main algorithms for human beings to really show who we are and what we can do.”
I express myself
through things I find joy in. The time in my life where I felt I was able to express myself was in high school.
I first discovered anime and my love for jazz music in high school with other fellow students who love it as much as I do. I remember a close friend and I petitioned to have an anime club at our school, and it was successful.
We spend after school hours, catching up on the latest animes and the Japanese pop culture. It was during those times where I was introduced to K-POP too.
Simultaneously, I was also involved in Marching band, Jazz band and Concert band. Jazz band was my favorite. Throughout my high school years, I learned many instruments from clarinet, trombone, piano, baritone and more.
After participating in a band, I was also playing soccer. I ended up joining the boys’ soccer team because nobody formed an all-girls soccer team and I loved it.
Although I enjoy expressing myself, it can be difficult at times depending on who I’m with. You never know who you can come across.
They may judge me by my skin color, background, my Togolese culture or the fact that I like certain things like anime, KPOP or played soccer on the boys’ soccer team. But to be honest, I find that most people that I come across are very relatable.
Sometimes I feel reluctant to express all of myself in social media platforms. That depends on the atmosphere I’m in.
I’m a very nervous person, very cautious and sometimes paranoid. But at the end of the day, everybody releases his or her creativity to popular platforms like Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Vine and many more. These platforms allow us to express our creativity and to receive inspiration as well.
Social media is also a great way to learn more about other creatives and through that, we are able to draw creativity from one another. Self-expression is one of the main algorithms for human beings to really show who we are and what we can do.
