Guns in America – Voices

“A responsible gun owner never wants to have to use it; it is just there for a worst-case scenario.”
Binghamton, NY
I am against gun control because, for starters, the second amendment of our constitution says it shall not be infringed. And if you look at the data, the places in America with the strictest gun control laws have the highest rates of gun crime. People have already tried to do things like ban certain guns and it hasn’t worked. In the 1990’s, in DC, they had a ban on handguns and crime skyrocketed. Canada in 1977 did the same thing and saw no change. I absolutely think carrying a gun is a human right. When guns are outlawed, only outlaws have guns. So, in order to protect yourself, protect your family, to defend yourself against tyranny and criminals, you should be allowed to have something that is going to work. It’s an American civil right and it is a legal right. I think carrying a gun would make me feel a lot safer. I’m actually learning how to shoot right now, because I have dealt with people attacking me on the street before and I want to be able to make sure I can defend myself if necessary. If I learn how to use it responsibly and get the proper training like I’m receiving right now, maybe one day I can carry a gun, but hopefully I will never have to use it. A responsible gun owner never wants to have to use it; it is just there for a worst-case scenario. I think that people need to follow the laws we have in place already. We have background checks, but some people don’t do their jobs and enter information into the system. The guy who shot up the Texas church was dishonorably discharged and should not have been allowed to purchase a gun, but the military never added that to the database. We also need to destigmatize mental health issues. Of all the gun deaths per year in America, 66% of them are suicides. Only a very small percentage is mass shootings. There are a lot of things we need to take into account, but taking away the guns is not going to help. Guns aren’t the problem. People are the problem. People who want to kill are going to kill whether they have a gun or not.
