Guns in America – Voices

“If you have a history of mental instability, violence or are under the age of 21, you shouldn’t have the right to bear arms.”
Brooklyn, NY
My opinion on guns is that everyone should have the right to bear arms, but there’s an exception; if you have a history of mental instability, violence or are under the age of 21, you shouldn’t have the right to bear arms.

Most people think that you can just walk into Walmart, buy a gun and walk out. But, you actually need a background check and you need your gun license. I’ve bought guns from Walmart before. It is not that easy to just walk out with a gun without going through a background check. The problem is that they are not thorough enough. Sometimes when you go to gun shows or any other center where there are hundreds of guns to choose from, there are loopholes and the wrong people get their hands on guns. And that puts everyone’s lives in danger. I also strongly believe that if you buy it, you shouldn’t be able to get it the same day. The sellers should give it a while because you don’t know what people’s intentions are. However, if you are law enforcement or are currently in the military, you shouldn’t have to wait. But, for everyday citizens they should have a thorough background check and should have to wait before their firearm is clear to be purchased.

The current issues of gun violence don’t really affect my job as someone in the military and in law enforcement. I’m not allowed to do anything on U.S. soil. I can go to war on U.S. citizens. I’m only allowed to do investigations. However, the people who shouldn’t have firearms or have the wrong intentions and abuse that power definitely makes my job harder. The NRA also makes it hard for people who want reasonable gun laws and want to solve these issues. I believe they are extremists and racists and ruin our chances of solving serious gun violence in our country.

If I’m being honest, as a black man, I would hate to give up my right to bear arms. Given the history of this nation, white supremacy and people within the Trump administration, people of color are often targets. Minorities should always have our right to bear arms and should feel empowered doing so.
